Succesful suggestion to the Volkswagen
Stiftung
On 27 June 2003, the Volkswagen Stiftung (Foundation) announced that it
intends to establish a new programme dedicated to funding research collaborations
with Africa. This new programme is entitled "Wissen für morgen - Kooperative
Forschungsvorhaben im sub-saharischen Afrika" (Knowledge for tomorrow -
Collaborative research endeavours in Sub-Sahara Africa). The Volkswagen
Stiftung called for suggestions on what specific collaborative research
should be funded. Jürgen Theiss suggested the area of renewable energies
and was subsequently asked to formally submit his suggestions. In close
collaboration, Jürgen Theiss, Stephen Karekezi, and Fabian Wagner, advised
by Dirk Assmann, summarized the suggestion of the
topic of renewable energies (in German) and submitted it to the Volkswagen
Stiftung on 9 September 2003.
On 25 November 2003, the Volkswagen Stiftung announced that the suggestion
had been successful. Among a great amount of submitted suggestions it was
selected to help define one of four sub-programmes. The one sub-programme
is entitled "Resources, their
Dynamics and Sustainability – Capacity Development in Comparative and Integrated
Approaches". In September 2004, the Volkswagen Stiftung will invite various
German and African experts to develop the details of this sub-programme.
Once the sub-programme will have been established, institutions and individuals
will be invited to apply for funding. We are already in the process in preparing
an application.
