Application process

Our recruitment process consists of four phases. To make sure that applicants put real efforts in each phase of the application there will be a moderate selection process after each phase. The best ones will be asked to enter the next phase. Like that we make sure that only those students invest time and effort in the full application who have a good chance of being selected for Nairobi.
We are always looking for well qualified volunteers who support us in Germany. If you are rejected but you still feel we could profit from your contributions do not hesitate to contact us about an 'internship' at Berlin-Nairobi Exchange.

Phase I

You have expressed your interest (see how you can apply). Now we need more information about you. Send your CV (in English) to Marko. The dead line for sending us your CV is two weeks after filling out the webform. And for those who filled out the webform only end of November the dead line for submitting the CV is 1 December 2007. So if you have filled out the webform only end of November then you have less than two weeks time for preparing and sending us your CV.
You can find some hints for preparing your CV here (in German). Try to include references/proofs for your extra-curricular activities plus telephone numbers of people who have worked with you. Please send us your CV both as a PDF file and as a DOC or TXT file.

Phase II

Now we need a letter of recommendation from the physics lecturer/professor who knows you best. It is entirely your responsability to chose the lecturer and to convince him/her to write the letter and to send it to us. You should tell him/her that we need this letter by XX January 2008.
Normally lecturers do not have much time. Make sure you contact him/her some weeks before the dead line or whenever we tell you that you have qualified for Phase II.
The letter should focus on your academic performance. But we are also interested in extra-curricular records. Your lecturer has several opportunities to send us his/her letter of recommendation:
  • by fax to
    +49.(0)30.722.398823
  • or by email to mfoerstel ät berlinnairobi.org
Generally it is not so difficult to get a letter of recommendation from a lecturer. Do not give up if the first one you approach on this issue refuses.

Phase III

End of January 2008, beginning of February 2008 we will conduct personal interviews in Berlin or telepone interviews. You will also have the chance to talk to some of the former participants.

Phase IV

The remaining applicants will be asked to hand in an application essay.
