The summer school will teach cost-effective and future-oriented photovoltaics research, which studies the conversion of solar radiation into electricity by utilising applied solid state physics, material sciences and electrical engineering. Photovoltaics is one of the worldwide strongest developing industries and has the tremendous potential for environmental friendly production of electricity. The summer school will be hosted on the campus of the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) near Nairobi and will consist of lectures, seminars and laboratory training, which will be given by photovoltaics experts and senior lecturers from Germany and Kenya. Young scientists (from advanced undergraduates to junior researchers and lecturers) of the wider East African region are invited to apply to participate. 30 participants will be selected on a competitive basis and fully financially supported. The summer school is a collaborative project of the Hahn-Meitner Institute in Berlin, JKUAT, and the Berlin-Nairobi Exchange and is fully funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. Additional travel grants are provided by the African Network of Scientific and Technological Institutions (ANSTI) of UNESCO.
