The International Office (Akademische Auslandsamt) at the Freie Universität Berlin informs about insurance coverage options provided by various insurance companies. It also issues a provisional certificate with which the exchange student can then obtain  insurance coverage from his chosen insurance company. The standard insurance coverage suggested by the International Office costs 52 Euro / month. (Florian Weissbach, 8/03)

Health insurance is compulsory in Germany and can be expensive depending on what is covered. As an example of companies which offer short term insurance there is Hanse Merkur whose premium amounts to about 2 Euro / day and  DKV  at 73 Euro / month. (Antony Owinoh, 8/03)
