Cost
of living
The DAAD scholarships rewarded to postgraduate physics students of the University
of Nairobi consist of 400 Euro / month (plus 2000 Euro for German language
training shared by all participating exchange students) and intended to be
a contribution to the cost of living in Berlin. To give the exchange students
a better idea on how much personal funds they might need to live in Berlin
it is hoped that the following personal accounts prove to be useful.
Personal account: I need about 500 Euro / month although some of my
friends do not manage to live that cheaply. My apartment costs 200 Euro /
month including electricity and heating. The telephone cost 25 Euro / month.
Such cheap apartments are hard to find except in unsafe neighbourhoods which
I do not recommend. I do not go out very much, maybe once or twice to the
cinema and a few beers per month. I pay careful attention on how much I spend
on food. (Mario Konschake, 8/03)
Personal account: I need 550 Euro / month. I would recommend sharing
an apartment which costs about 130 Euro / month per person. (Marko Förstel,
8/03)
Personal account: Compared to other parts of Europe, food is relatively
cheap in Germany, provided one knows where to go, .i.e. the right
supermarkets. I have just consulted a student who says that her monthly groceries
bill is never more than 150 Euros. (Antony Onwinoh, 8/03)
